Reiki and Anxiety: What Does the Research Really Tell Us?

One of the things I appreciate most about Reiki is the opportunity it gives people to slow down, relax, and take a little time for themselves.

As both a registered nurse and a Reiki practitioner, I've always been interested in understanding the different ways we can support our well-being. I believe there is value in both personal experience and scientific research, and I think there's room for thoughtful conversations about both.

Something that may surprise people is that Reiki has been studied in clinical research, including studies exploring its potential effects on anxiety. I wanted to take a closer look at what researchers have found, what those findings mean, and why I find this area of research encouraging.

What Does the Research Say About Reiki and Anxiety?

In 2024, researchers published a systematic review and meta-analysis examining the effects of Reiki on anxiety.

The review included 13 studies involving a total of 824 participants. Rather than looking at the results of just one study, researchers combined findings from multiple studies to better understand whether Reiki might have a positive effect on anxiety.

The overall findings were encouraging. Researchers found that Reiki was associated with a statistically significant reduction in anxiety. I find this particularly interesting because anxiety and stress can affect so many aspects of our well-being.

There are also important details to consider. The studies included different groups of participants and varied in how Reiki was provided and how anxiety was measured. This means that although the combined findings were positive, more high-quality research is needed to better understand how consistent these benefits are.

For me, the value of this research isn't about proving that Reiki is the answer to everything. It's about continuing to explore how Reiki may contribute to a person's overall sense of well-being.

What Could This Mean for Someone Considering Reiki?

If you've never experienced Reiki before, you might be wondering what these findings mean for you.

For me, one of the most meaningful aspects of Reiki is creating an opportunity for someone to simply be present, without expectations or demands on their time. During a session, there's nothing you need to accomplish. You don't have to know anything about Reiki beforehand, and there's no particular way you're supposed to feel.

Some people describe feeling deeply relaxed, while others notice warmth, tingling, or a sense of calm. Everyone's experience is different. I believe that having space to rest and feel cared for is valuable, especially when life feels overwhelming.

The research on Reiki and anxiety is encouraging, but it doesn't mean everyone will experience the same results. Reiki is a complementary wellness practice, not a replacement for medical or mental health care.

As a nurse, I understand the importance of appropriate healthcare. As a Reiki practitioner, I also appreciate the role that supportive, individualized wellness experiences can play in someone's life.

My hope is that sharing this research encourages people to stay curious, ask questions, and explore what supports their own well-being.

Continuing the Conversation

I believe there's still so much to learn about Reiki, and I find it encouraging that researchers are continuing to explore its potential benefits. My background in nursing has taught me the importance of asking questions, looking at evidence, and recognizing that every person's experience is unique. My experience as a Reiki practitioner has also shaped how I think about caring for the whole person.

I don't believe these perspectives have to compete with one another. For me, they are both part of an ongoing commitment to learning, understanding, and supporting well-being.

I'll continue sharing research here in The Allesaura Journal, along with information about Reiki, whole-person wellness, and reflections from my own practice.
